Sophie like Odysseus

It’s not like we haven’t seen celebrities disembark here over the years. Great people from the world of economics, politics, arts, sports and journalism have chosen to anchor their boats in front of the imposing fortress at the port of NAOK. After heading up the unusual and tiring stairs, they enter one of the most impressive monuments of UNESCO’s cultural heritage, the old town of Corfu.

As this girl seemed familiar, as if we have met in the past, we started talking. The great swimmer Sophie Edington, born in Loxton in South Australia, twice world record holder in 50 meters backstroke (2008- 2009) and once in 4x100 in women’s medley relay (a record that she held for three years, 2004-2007) with four golden medals in Commonwealth Games (2006 and 2010) and another two in 2005 World Aquatics Championships. She arrived in Corfu at the end of a tour around the Greek islands and she was hosted for a week.

Sophie Edington completed the course of her brilliant career in 2012 at the age of 28. She moved to Switzerland and worked two years for the International Olympic Committee. Today she lives in Monaco, she works in asset management of the Cambridge Strategy and she is doing her PhD in Business Administration in Paris.

Last summer Sophie took part in the Olympic Games in Rio with a different hat, that of the public relations and press representative of the refugees’ Olympic team. A post that requires a person with high sense of social responsibility. Sophie not only had these qualities but even more. All athletes loved her solidarity and honesty.

Sophie Edington is a female Odysseus, a world traveler who reflects the principles and ethos of Odysseus and thus a very good reason to welcoming her again in Corfu.
